BIRMINGHAM PRCA CHAPTER adopts hayes high school

BIRMINGHAM – The Birmingham chapter of the Public Relations Council of Alabama (PRCA-B) has partnered with the City of Birmingham Board of Education to adopt Hayes High School.

Formerly a middle school, Hayes is the school system’s newest high school. With an enrollment of 715 students, Hayes is located in a beleaguered section of the city near downtown and lacks many of the extracurricular activities like athletics and marching band that are taken for granted at other schools.

“We’re thrilled PRCA has adopted Hayes and we look forward to our students there benefiting from this relationship,” said Dr. Peggy Sparks, coordinator of the board’s Partnership in Education (PIE) program. “There are a lot of Hayes’ grads out there who we need to hear from, and we expect this partnership to help achieve that goal.”

Hayes’ staff and students will benefit from the partnership through:

  • Job shadowing opportunities with PRCA-affiliated organizations
  • Internship opportunities with PRCA-affiliated organizations
  • Hayes honor students attending monthly PRCA luncheons
  • Pro bono public relations consultation and support (graphic design, media relations, printing, photography etc.) from PRCA members
  • Speakers from PRCA visiting Hayes’ English classes to encourage students to pursue careers in the communication arts

PRCA is the state's longest operating and largest group of public relations practitioners. The organization exists to further the professional and networking interests of today's public relations and communication professional in private, public and nonprofit businesses and organizations. Along with networking, PRCA offers career development and civic improvement opportunities, seeks to mentor college students and works to improve the professionalism of public relations practice through its accreditation program.

“We hope this is the beginning of a fruitful relationship for both the school and our organization, but most importantly, the students,” said Adam Kelley, PRCA-B’s Vice President of Programs.
